Après
les frères Coen, les frères Dardenne, il était
temps d’avoir aussi dans la sphère musicale, des
frères en « enne » sans haine mais bien
rock’n’roll. C’est chose faite maintenant avec
les frères Madden (Benji et Joël de leurs
prénoms) qui ont atteint à leur tour la
consécration sous le nom de « Good Charlotte »
(non, ce ne sont pas des accros à la charlotte aux fraises
mais plutôt à un livre pour gamins dont le titre,
« Good Charlotte » donc, a directement inspiré
le nom de baptême du groupe), un groupe de rock sous
influences punk et drôlement efficace, qui a vu le jour dans
le Maryland en 1996.
C’est à l’occasion d’un concert
des Beastie
Boysque les deux frangins prennent la décision
de faire carrière dans le rock’n’roll. Ils sont
rejoints ensuite par deux potes, Paul Thomas à la guitare,
et Aaron Escolopio à la batterie. Les musiciens partent de
Waldorf en 1998 pour Annapolis et lors d’un show-case, font
la connaissance d’un Billy Martin subjugué par leur
musique, et qui décide de lâcher son groupe
d’alors pour intégrer les Good Charlotte à la
guitare. C’est Billy Martin qui contribua entre autres
à faire connaître le groupe, qui se fait aussi
progressivement remarquer, notamment en 2000, lors d’un
tremplin et à l’occasion de concerts
avec Blink
182ou encore Bad
Religion.
La même année, les Good Charlotte sortent leur
première galette éponyme sur le label Epic, dont le
single « Little Things » obtient un franc
succès. Après le passage MTViesque de rigueur pour
devenir des superstars, (parlant de MTV, les frères Madden
ont aussi fait les présentateurs de l’émission
« All Things Rock » pour la chaîne), les Good
Charlotte sont invités à composer le
générique d’une série renommée
aux US, et participent aussi en tant que musiciens-acteurs à
un teenage movie parodique.
Mais c’est avec un Good Charlotte nouvelle mouture (Aaron a
mis les voiles) et un nouvel opus « The Young And The
Hopeless » sorti en 2002 que le groupe cartonne
véritablement, avec une série de hits, de «
Lifestyles of The Rich and The Famous » à «
Wondering » en passant par « The Anthem ». La
vague « pop punk » fait désormais sensation dans
le monde entier et forts de ce triomphe, les Good Charlotte
(après avoir lancé une marque de sous-vêtements
pour cartonner aussi dans le marketing) publient un
troisième album en 2004, « The Chronicles Of Life And
Death », version « Life », et version «
Death », du grand débat manichéen à
plein tubes. Rien que ça.
